Wingspan: When and why did you start playing basketball?
Aluga: “I start playing basketball in third grade on a YMCA team with my brother, sister, and my mom as our coach.”
Wingspan: How has basketball impacted your life?
Aluga: “Basketball has made me many friends, given me countless opportunities, and shaped me into the person I am. I think a big part of that is the determination it teaches you. I’m not someone who gives things up easily, and that’s because you can’t when you’re on the court.”
Wingspan: Who is your biggest inspiration?
Aluga: “My biggest inspiration is my dad. He was born in Kenya but used basketball to get himself a full scholarship to Abilene Christian University. Because of this, he was able to make a great life for my family and extended family.”
Wingspan: What are you excited about for this season?
Aluga: “I’m excited to play fast. I loved our team last year, but now we are better. A lot of that has to do with almost everyone having varsity experience, and because we are more comfortable on the court we can play faster instead of trying to control everything.”
Wingspan: How does it feel to have the most varsity team experience?
Aluga: “Honestly, it doesn’t feel that different anymore. Last year I was the only player with varsity experience, but this year we have seven other guys besides me with varsity experience. Knowing this makes me confident for our season and the future.”
Wingspan: What do you hope to accomplish?
Aluga: “I just want to win. Last year we were 8-24, and I hope we can turn the record around this year.”
Wingspan: Do you plan to continue basketball after high school? Why or why not?
Aluga: “Absolutely, I would love to play basketball in college and if I keep the trajectory I have right now I will hopefully end up at Yale.”
