From now until the end of the school year, Floral Design students have moved from making floral arrangements to learning how to apply their skills to future professions. Students have been working on a series of projects where they plan their own wedding; everything from the flowers decorating the venues, to the flavor of wedding cake.
“I like being able to be creative and it’s actually something I can use in the future,” sophomore Bia Godoy said. “It’s actually something I can use later on in my life; when I’m planning my own wedding, I can look at the budget and the vision boards I’ve put together.”
Students are able to learn how floral design can be more than a hobby and actually culminate into a career – such as a wedding planner.
“This project has taught me that it takes a lot of work to plan a wedding,” sophomore Mari Vanacour said. “It’s been cool learning about how I can use floral design in the future and actually use it in a job. I didn’t realize that the skills we’ve learned went past making arrangements in class and it’s been cool seeing how I can use these skills to make money.”
The project, which is largely open ended, allows students an opportunity to show off their creative flair and add a personal connection to things.
“I’ve liked getting to pick my own dresses and look at what I want for the future,” sophomore Georgia Jackson said. “It’s been super fun doing all the things; we’ve gotten to choose our venue, the dresses and suits we want, the color scheme, the food, a wedding cake, and music too. We’ve done budgeting too. It’s kind of tedious but it’s good to know how much stuff costs in real life.”
Due to the fact that this project is more open than prior assignments, students are also learning valuable life skills.
“I’ve had to structure my time and all that because we have a lot of projects to finish and I need to get them all done in order’” Godoy said. “The budgeting has made sure that I’m keeping track of how I’m spending my money. I’ve also had to keep track of how much time I’m spending on certain things because I need to get all the steps done before moving onto another project.”
