Every year, parents and guardians can get a closer look at their student’s school day and meet their teachers at Monday’s Meet the Teacher Night from 6-7:30 p.m.
“[Meet the Teacher Night] is important mainly for the families to get to know who their students’ teachers are, and so we can meet the community and get to know students’ parents,” AP Environmental Science teacher Gerald Nichols said.
Meet the Teacher Night is also an opportunity for students to become more familiar with their teachers and get a sense of what the rest of the year may look like.
“Yeah, [it’s beneficial],” freshman Aishah Sayyed said. “I mean, you get to know your teachers better, and while you do learn stuff [about teachers] on the first day of school, you get to see it from a parental perspective.”
For some teachers, preparing for the event includes creating slides with information about the class for families. Teachers can also address any questions or concerns directly.
“Usually I have a slide on the board that just kind of says: welcome, here’s who I am, here’s my email,” Nichols said. “And I just chat with parents as they come in and out about what questions they have about my courses.”
Parents are provided with an understanding that, in Nichols’ eyes, is essential to best support students’ learning.
“[Some takeaways of Meet the Teacher Night are] usually just about who the parents are, who the students are, and who the teachers are, and how we can all work together to make sure everyone succeeds,” Nichols said.
