Heading into the Northwest ISD Volleyball Classic Thursday, the volleyball team was riding a three-match winning streak, starting their season undefeated.
The Redhawks picked up three consecutive 2-0 victories against Argyle (12-2), Lucas Lovejoy (11-4), and El Paso Coronado (3-5) on the first day of the tournament to extend that streak to six matches.
Then they dropped their Friday matches against Flower Mound (11-5), Fort Worth Eagle Mountain (12-7), and Trophy Club Byron Nelson (19-0) by scores of 2-1, 2-1, and 2-0.
The losing skid would not last long, however, as the team defeated McKinney (10-9) 2-0 and Rockwall (4-9) 2-1 in back-to-back matches Saturday, finishing 5-3 at the tournament and with an 8-3 season record.
“We played some very good teams,” head coach Eighmy Dobbins said. “What we took away is that we need to stay controlled and focused throughout each matchup.”
For senior outside hitter and Eckerd College commit Jaiden Harris, a tournament affects the players differently than a single match.
“[At tournaments}, the energy is always so high,” Harris said. “Playing in so many matches is difficult, but it’s nice to compete against different competition before districts.”
