You walk into class one day and see names on boxes displayed on the projector screen with helpful labels like, “Teacher’s desk” or “Front of the classroom”. We all know what this means-a new seating chart.
Many teachers here on campus have assigned seatings in their classrooms. Some teachers here on campus claim seating charts help students complete their work when they’re away from their friends and it’s easier to take attendance.They will typically change it every unit or every couple months. All you’re hoping for is that you don’t have to sit with anyone annoying or rude and hope that sometime in the future, you’ll be able to sit next to your friend or at least an acquaintance.
Students should be able to pick out their seats because students are more willing to collaborate and work well together if they sit with people they like. It also gives students more freedom and to choose what type of chair they want to sit at: the normal rolly chairs, the cylinder looking chairs that move all the time-caution: may result in falling, and the high spinny chairs.
Teachers will arrange people together by their different personalities or different strengths and weaknesses because they think it will be better for group work. Each student has different ideas and opinions that will hopefully improve the quality of the work. In a study conducted by The National Institute of Health, researchers noticed that students are more likely to be friends with the people they sit next to. But, this method isn’t always successful.
Grouping students together with very different personalities means it could be hard to get along or agree with them. It makes the work a lot harder than it has to be because there’s always someone who doesn’t do their part, someone who goes ahead and doesn’t explain or help the rest of the group, the person who’s the annoying one, and one or two other people who actually do the work.
If students are seated with friends that they work well with, then they would listen to each other and cooperate better while still having fun. It would be more time efficient because they wouldn’t have to deal with people who are hard to agree with. This allows for a more enjoyable working experience and willingness to collaborate with each other.
