It’s called the wild west for a reason. The football team (0-2) found that out the hard way Thursday night, losing a western-themed non-district game 21-10 to Centennial (2-0) at Kuykendall Stadium.
Like a barfight at an Old West saloon, things got rowdy very quickly. Senior wide receiver Matthew McClain intercepted a pass on the Redhawks’ two-yard line with eight minutes left in the first quarter. junior Pax Buck nailed a 21-yard field goal to put the Redhawks up 3-0 with four minutes to go in the half.
But, as with the fast pace of many Western movies, it wouldn’t stay that way for long.
Right after retaking the field, senior quarterback Khi Bunting connected with McClain on a 57-yard pass downfield for a touchdown to give the Redhawks a 10-0 lead.
Centennial soon completed a 29-yard scoring drive of their own for a touchdown and point-after kick, making it 10-7.
With two minutes left in the third quarter, Centennial forced their way back into the Redhawks’ red zone, but had a touchdown drive foiled thanks to another interception by McClain.
With the Titans back inside their red zone to start the fourth quarter, the Redhawks allowed a rushing touchdown and fell behind for the first time all night, 14-10. They would not be able to come back, as Centennial scored again with three minutes left to win 21-10.
Redhawks football players and coaches did not immediately reply to Liberty Wingspan’s request for comment.
