Making a mums is big business in Frisco, but on Wednesday, registered students can go to the library to create a mini HOCO mum as a Crocs charm or a keychain.

“It’s a time for students to craft with one another; to learn a new skill or create something that makes their heart happy,” librarian Chelsea Hamilton said. “Crafters will select the ribbons they want to use, grab a flower and any other items, and create! Everything will be laid out and ready when people arrive.”

Starting the craft labs in 2024, Hamilton provides all supplies for free.

“I feel like it’s fun–you can talk to people, help others, and much more,” junior Izna Ahmad said. “You can learn many types of craft. Last year, we did rock painting, we painted/drew on cup coasters, we made 3D snowflakes–and I think there were many more that I don’t remember.”

The craft labs are usually open for 25-40 students, and among those planning to attend is junior Zasha Zafeer.

“I am planning to attend the craft lab this month, as it gives me something fun and exciting to do in advisory rather than just studying for classes or walking around. It gives me ideas for things I could do at home for fun! Sometimes it was kind of confusing when we had to do activities like crocheting, but other activities like making mini books were really fun!”

Taking in the cost of real mums, Hamilton is precutting the ribbons into 5-inch lengths and will have an instruction slide on the projector screen.

“I think any activity to increase school spirit is going to be a hit,” Hamilton said. “I know some students like the idea of mums, but the traditional ones are too cumbersome or expensive. Making a mini-mum in the library gives everyone the chance to show school spirit and not have to worry about funds. It’s also a great time to work with other students they might not have known. It’s great to bond over a common topic of interest, especially crafting.”
