The cross country team is going back in time on Thursday when they visit Anderson Elementary to run alongside younger kids, hoping to give them a fun introduction to and spark some enthusiasm for cross country before they head into middle school.
“We’re just going to run and have fun with them tomorrow, and try acting like good role models,” sophomore Alina Ji said. “We just want to get the little kids excited about running so that when they go into middle school they’ll actually be interested in running cross country.”
Sophomore Draco Lorenzo says that the event is preparation for both the younger kids and the team.
“Helping the elementary schoolers get some experience for cross country in middle school will be really fun,” Lorenzo said. “Teaching future classes helps us too because it’s a new experience for us.”
Co-head coach Khera Vay emphasized that the Run Club isn’t just for the elementary students, but also a meaningful experience for the high school runners.
“Run Club run is just a pre-meet shakeout for the Redhawks which allows them to run with our feeder pattern kids and model the opportunity they would have as high school athletes,” Vay said. “It is an opportunity for service for them as well.”
