The job of a school librarians have evolved over the years and to help community members better understand the job, Frisco ISD is hosting Becoming a School Librarian from 5–6 p.m. on Wednesday in the Lawler Middle School library.
“I provide a space for students & teachers to study, collaborate, decompress, play games, read, and more,” librarian Chelsea Hamilton said. “I try to adapt the library space to meet the needs of the campus on any given day.”
Wednesday’s event is a new opportunity that allows attendees to talk to different schools and people.
“I definitely think [an opportunity like this] would have been beneficial to me,” Chelsea said. “I knew you had to have your master’s degree, but I thought, like many specialties in education, I just had to take a certification test. Wrong. Because I did it backwards, I had to take an extra 21 hours before I could be certified. If there was a librarian job fair, I would have known the right path to take. I got where I wanted, but added several extra steps in between.”
Currently pursuing her Master’s in Library Science at Texas Woman’s University online, AP English Literature teacher and softball coach Randi Hamilton is looking forward to the opportunity to learn through this event.
“I have never attended an event like the upcoming one, but I am planning to attend this one,” Randi Hamilton said. “I am excited to get to meet and interact with current and future school librarians and learn as much as possible.”
After a lifetime love for reading, becoming a librarian was always the ultimate goal for Randi Hamilton.
“I think [this event] is a really cool opportunity for people who may be interested in becoming a school librarian to be able to see what the process of obtaining a position like this may look like,” Randi said. “I have always loved to read, and the library was always my favorite place in the school when I was growing up. I knew when I entered the field of education that it was somewhere I wanted to eventually end up working in.”
The event will allow prospective librarians to meet with librarians and broaden their understanding of the day-to-day experiences of school librarians.
“I love [this event],” Chelsea said. “I think any chance for people to see what all the job entails is wonderful. We aren’t just book people, although that part is fun. Being a librarian is the best job I’ve had.”
