The girls’ basketball team (3-3) starts Thanksgiving break a bit early as the Redhawks are playing in a tournament from Thursday to Saturday, with their first opponent being Monterey. The team will also be competing against W.T. White and Prosper on Monday and Tuesday, over Thanksgiving break, respectively.
“I think the focus [between preparing for the tournament and preparing for regular games] was a little different,” head coach Mikaeyla Alfred said. “I think a new season, new coach, the nerves were all over the place for the girls but once we settled into who we are and what we’re trying to accomplish, I think that made a big difference.”
For sophomore Harper Johnson, having a good mentality is key to performing well at the tournament.
“I would say the biggest challenge is the mental because we are going to go against some good teams,” Johnson said. “So just staying in the game and not letting one bad play determine the whole game.”
To Alfred, sticking to what the team can do best is the most important expectation to reach at the upcoming games.
“My expectations for the teams is to just do the things we do well consistently and not go outside the things we know well,” Alfred said. “And the things we have been working on, doing that and excelling on that on both ends of the floor.”
The games over break are a chance for Johnson to achieve some of her personal goals.
“I’d say some personal goals are just staying in the game, getting some good defensive plays and getting six rebounds,” Johnson said.
