For those of you who know who Suki Waterhouse is, you probably saw her before you heard her. Waterhouse, unlike many musical artists, is actually a model, musician, and actress all at the same time.
The modeling came first; Waterhouse started this career at age 16. Six years later, she starred in her first film and officially kicked off her acting career. Her first single was dropped in 2016 and her debut album went public in 2022; some of her older songs have gone viral more recently (“Good Looking”), giving her a boost onto center stage.
Despite Waterhouse’s pretty recent start in music, she has seen a large amount of success and had a couple pretty notable collabs, including opening for Taylor Swift on her “Eras” Tour and Laufey during her “A Matter of Time” Tour.
Her music is moody and poetic, with her first album (I Can’t Let Go) harnessing slower, more emotional melodies. This album leans more towards indie pop, and serves a melancholic ode to heartbreak, detailing the emotional pain through lovely melodies. This slower pace invites listeners to take a minute and connect with the music.
Waterhouse’s second album (Memoir of a Sparklemuffin) is my personal favorite and despite the silly name, this work should be taken seriously because it’s a genuinely good compilation of music. Memoir of a Sparklemuffin is a more upbeat album than her debut work, incorporating the energetic chords of alternative rock and the hazy vocals of indie pop. The production of the songs adds a roughness to the instrumentation, and when blended with Waterhouse’s accent-tinged voice creates a retro feel. The lean towards alternative rock, complete with electric guitar and soft snare, helps create an emotional (some call it “cinematic”) feel that makes her music popular on the indie rock scene.
