The girls basketball team (8-17, 3-5) faced Frisco (5-17, 1-7) on Tuesday at The Nest, winning 45-33.
“We really honed in on back screens and switching in practice,” head coach Mykaela Alfred said. “That was super beneficial to the game. Rebounding and executing the offense and staying poised against their pressure really helped. Knocking down shots was huge.
According to junior Danivea Hughes, the team was able to adapt thanks to their previous game against Frisco.
“They did a lot of back cuts and a lot of down screens, so it took us a lot of time to understand what they were doing,” Hughes said. “But in order to adjust, we just started switching instead of staying because last time we stayed, it didn’t work for us.”
Continuing their perseverance, the team travels to Lebanon Trail (4-18, 1-7) on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
“Even though it’s a quick turnaround, this is going to be our third time that we see Lebanon Trail, so we’re just going to try and take care of the ball and play sound defense, and then I think we’ll come out on top,” Alfred said.
For Hughes, the game against Frisco provided a good idea of the strategies that would work well against Lebanon Trail.
“Lebanon Trail also does a lot of back cuts, but they just don’t sit back screens,” Hughes said. “We’re going to not get lost and be aggressive since Lebanon Trail is more aggressive than Frisco.”
