People get hurt and sometimes hurt each other.
But how does one respond when they get hurt?
That’s the theme sophomore English students are exploring through their unit about forgiveness. Students selected a book out of seven options to read and explain how a character in their book connects to forgiveness and what motivates them to choose forgiveness.
“Our books, all from different kinda groups, different areas in the world and so a lot of them are having their overarching themes,” English teacher Ashley Worsham said. “Some of them deal with like family things and stuff like that, but all of them have a character who has been wronged. And so it’s all about did the person who did the wrongdoing kinda make up for it through their actions and are they able to be forgiven. So our students have to take a deep dive and decide personally for them would they be able to forgive this person.”
Students started reading their books and are enjoying finding more about the characters. At the end of the unit students will write their performance based assignment also known as a PBA with their conclusion.
“I chose I’m not your perfect Mexican daughter by Ericka Sanchez and it’s about her mom or the main character Julia and her moms relationship after her sister passed away,” sophomore Grace Garrison said. “So far there hasn’t been a lot of forgiveness but I think further in the story Julia and her mom will make amends.”
