More than 2.1 million Texans took part in early voting for Tuesday’s primary elections. For those that haven’t voted, here is some information to know before heading to the polls.
What are primary elections?
Primary elections provide voters an opportunity to choose which candidate they want to represent their political party.The winners advance to compete for offices at federal, state and local levels.
What should voters verify before going to the polls?
Voters should make sure they are registered and check sample ballots ahead of time. Voters must also bring a photo ID, or identification by the Texas Secretary of State.
What positions are voters deciding on?
The ballot includes several offices such as statewide positions, the Texas Legislature, the U.S. House, and other federal, state, and local offices.
Where and when can people vote?
Voting hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.. Voters can find voting locations closest to them through votetexas.gov.
What happens after the primary election?
The candidates who win their nominations will advance to the November 3rd general election, where voters will choose the final office holders. If no candidate receives more than 50% of their votes, a runoff election may be held in May to decide the winner.
