The blocking is set, and the lines are rehearsed, and now the only thing left is the show as the theatre department is set to debut their UIL One Act Play show The Three Musketeers with a public performance in the auditorium Wednesday at 7 p.m. with the zone competition Friday at Independence High School at 5 p.m.
“This is our opportunity for people, especially students, to see our show,” senior Anagha Konuru said. “This is mostly because UIL takes place during the school day, so many students wouldn’t be able to attend on the day of the competition. At our public performance, we will not only perform our show but also practice our seven-minute setup and strike, just as we would on our official competition day.”
Most theatre department performances are for a public audience, but Friday’s contest is in front of judges who will determine if the Redhawks advance in the state competition.
The contest nature of The Three Musketeers brings a different energy for Konuru.
“I always feel much closer and bonded with my cast during UIL season, considering we are all working towards the same goal, and we lift each other up because when one of us wins, all of us win,” Konuru said. “I also enjoy how much UIL pushes me as an actor. Our director is always pushing us to be our very best, but I’ve personally found some of my best work to be during UIL season.”
For junior Safaa Shaik, spending time with theater friends and waiting to see results are highlights of UIL competitions.
“I like spending time with friends, and it’s [also] always fun to compete as we are together the entire day and it’s exciting and scary to see what happens.”
