Some band students are preparing to step into leadership roles for the upcoming year, as auditions for the band leadership team get underway.
Members of the band program are trying out for positions such as drum major and section leader, roles that require both musical ability and leadership skills. The audition process is designed to evaluate students on their experience, communication, and readiness to guide others.
“We are starting what we call band leadership team auditions,” band director Ana Hinojosa said. “Students go through several elements, including submitting a resume, an intent form, and answering leadership questions. In addition to their marching and musical responsibilities, they will also participate in an interview this year, similar to a job interview.”
Hinojosa said the process will include training sessions over the next few weeks, leading up to final auditions at the end of April. By then, the full band leadership team is expected to be selected.
Students currently involved in the leadership team say the experience extends beyond rehearsals and performances, offering opportunities to support the broader band community.
“I think it’s fun because we get to help with things like middle school events and other activities at the school,” sophomore Noah Quintana said. “We also get to go on extra trips and spend time with other leadership members. It’s a great experience and a good way to give back to the band program.”
