For the second season in a row and the third time in school history, the softball team (9-4) will be advancing to the playoffs. The Redhawks secured a postseason berth with a 3-2 win over Memorial (6-7) on the road Tuesday.
Things were all quiet on the scoring front for both teams until the top of the third inning, when senior utility player/pitcher Sam Byrnes delivered a two-run double to right field that senior utility player Addison Hanson quickly followed with an RBI double. After the team allowed the Warriors to score runs of their own during the fifth and seventh innings, Hanson struck out three Memorial batters to prevent the surrender of a run and clinch the game for the Redhawks.
“We really had to fight for everything,” head coach Randi Hamilton said. “Both teams played a really clean game, and we had to work hard to score our runs. We played with a lot of grit offensively and defensively.”
Freshman Shelsy Duran said the team’s mindset helped them pull out the win.
“Overall we had a good mindset and stayed locked in,” Duran said.
