In the land of Redhawks, “giddy up” might be a more appropriate phrase as western wear is the theme for the school day on Thursday and through the night’s 7 p.m. football game against Centennial at Kuykendall Stadium.
For every football game day, students and staff are encouraged to dress up in the theme selected.
“I think it makes our student section more cohesive and then we’re also more hype and we are all connected,” junior Annabell Supratman said. “You can tell that we are the student section so I think it’s beneficial to dress up.”
With Texas having a strong western flair dating to its roots, Thursday’s theme is one many students quickly took a liking to.
“I like the western dress up theme because of the fact that I get to wear my cowboy boots and my western style hat,” senior Aurora Spector said.
Students are now able to earn points for dressing up in theme. When a student dresses up in the specific theme for that night’s football game, they are awarded points in their second period class. Students with the most points are then rewarded with treats provided by the school.
“I like [the point system] because it enforces students and makes them want to dress up more,” Supratman said. “It makes the whole school’s vibe better.”
Giving students points and rewards for dressing up has other benefits according to Spector.
“I think it’s good that students get points for dressing up,” Spector said. “It incentivizes them to participate in school camaraderie and spirit.”
