Orchestra is hosting an arts and crafts social after school Thursday in the orchestra room where students will find themselves in a relaxed and calm environment.
“The arts and crafts social is meant to have more of a sedentary, inactive vibe–students can bring their own crafts from home or bring in art portfolio items to work on,” orchestra president, senior Callie Yim said. “Students can also participate in bracelet making, origami folding, and coloring in coloring books.”
The social offers students the opportunity to socialize and work on crafts, showing a Bob Ross painting video, and an origami folding tutorial.
“We’ll have some calming music playing, as well as a bunch of activities that are perfect for people who may just want a break from the stresses of everyday life,” sophomore Sophia Essa said. “People are encouraged to bring any of their own projects, and to socialize with others!”
The goal for Thursday’s social was to provide all orchestra students a chance to participate.
“Observing the last few years as an orchestra officer, I noticed that many members avoided or did not appreciate physical activities that many of our major socials consisted of,” Yim said. “To create a truly inclusive program for all of our members, I thought adding a social exclusively for laid-back activities would allow students to enjoy our program beyond making music in class.”
This is the first year for the arts and crafts social and Yim believes it will have a lasting impact on years to come.
“I definitely think this social event could become a recurring one every year,” Yim said. “We are not expecting major turn-outs as we understand that this type of event may not be for everyone. However, we highly value inclusivity and encouraging community-building by being sensitive to the interests of everyone, not simply catering our events for the majority.”
