Through research, planning, and presentation, AP Human Geography (HGAP) students are exploring community issues. By preparing short speeches about real-world issues, they are developing skills in organization, critical thinking, and public speaking.
“Students are supposed to learn speech skills and being able to talk to a group of individuals and be able to clearly communicate their presentation and they are supposed to like have that confidence to speak to a whole group of people,” AP Human Geography teacher Kassidy Scott said.
As HGAP students prepare their speeches, they face the challenge of choosing which issues to highlight and how to organize their ideas within a two-minute time limit.
“When I was preparing for my speech I felt like the hardest part was the planning,” Jasmine Tai said.“Because there were just so many issues that specific place had and I just had to choose like so many because I had to fit under the two minute time limit.”
