Staff reporter Lea Garcia-Salazar sits down with sophomore Noel Benny to talk about his saxophone journey.

Name: Noel Benny

Grade: sophomore

Years of Experience: 5 years

Wingspan: What instrument do you play in band?

Benny: “I play the baritone saxophone.”

Wingspan: How long have you been playing the saxophone in band?

Benny: “I have been playing the saxophone since 6th grade.”

Wingspan: How do you prepare for band rehearsals and performances?

Benny: “Our band practices three times a week and we football games and competitions where we perform. We have a strict schedule that is almost the same every week so we know what to expect. Our warmups are almost always the same to develop a consistent routine.”

Wingspan: What do you enjoy most about being part of a band?

Benny: “I really enjoy playing my instrument and hanging out with people I can relate with.”

Wingspan: How do you balance your personal life and commitments with being in a band?

Benny: “I usually don’t go too overboard with commitments during the marching season because of the rough schedule with band. However, I usually always find a way to manage my time with band and other activities. With managing my homework, I usually work on it immediately when I get home or during advisory.”

Wingspan: What advice would you give to someone interested in learning to play the saxophone in a band setting?

Benny: “Good luck! It might be rough at first but it only gets way better after, and also dont stress that much.”
