Starting high school can be overwhelming, but 9th graders in theatre have the chance to meet other theatre students at Thursday’s theatre freshmen social at 4:30 p.m. in the black box.
“The social is a chance for freshmen to get to become more experienced and explore the department, while meeting individuals like the directors and officers,” theatre president, senior Lexi Holding said. “We’ll be having a scavenger hunt, Q&A, and fun activities for freshmen.”
The opportunity to meet new people is the primary reason why freshman Daphne Atchley is looking forward to the social.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to meet new people through the activities they have planned,” Atchley said. “As of now I only really know five to seven people from the entire program.”
Making friends through class can take some time, but Thursday’s social is designed to potentially speed up the process.
“Socialization opportunities are very important, as it creates safe spaces for people who may be a bit scared or nervous to join high school theatre,” Holding said. “And, [it] gives them a chance to meet new people and ask questions they otherwise would be nervous to ask and admit. We hope this event will help people find their space in the theatre and friends in this department.”
Allowing students to find their safe space in the program is a focus of socials according to theatre officer Karthika Menon.
“[Socials] are really important, as developing our department in a program like theatre where collaboration is crucial when we do shows and to create a safe and open community,” Menon said.
Socials foster an environment that helps students connect, but in Atchley’s opinion, participating in shows is also a valuable way to bond with others.
“Socials definitely help students connect, but I think a more valuable way to connect in the theater community is to audition or apply for the shows,” Atchley said. “Doing theater shows has given me a great sense of community and because of how long-term they are, I’m able to establish more meaningful relationships.”
