HOSA and Carter BloodCare are hosting a blood drive on Monday with four mobile donation centers located outside the gym/auditorium with a record high 94 people signed up to donate.
“It’s important for our school to host a blood drive there’s a lot of students here that are in good health, and are willing to give up blood,” HOSA president, senior Stephanie Okorie said. When it comes to adults, sometimes they’re more tentative to donating their blood, but since high school seniors are provided with the opportunity to work for their cords, they have incentives that get them to participate.”
Members of HOSA get numerous opportunities to volunteer and help out, earning them hours and giving them a way to give back to the community.
“I donated my blood because I wanted to save lives,” junior Abhishek Sriram said. “This cause is important to me because I have seen many of my extended family face severe medical conditions due to blood loss, and I wanted to help save lives like theirs.”
Earlier this year, HOSA was forced to postpone the blood drive due to the snowstorm, but with a record number of people signed up to donate blood, Okorie is looking forward to seeing how much blood is actually donated.
“The most rewarding part is when the blood drive’s over, and we get to see how much blood we actually got in the end,” Okorie said. “Each year, we’ve gotten more and more clients, and so this year, they’ve given us more sign up slots because we’ve always met our goal.”
