Name: Paula Sanchez
Grade: 11th
Years of experience: 6 years
Instrument: clarinet
Wingspan: Why did you decide to play clarinet?
Sanchez: “The lady at the instrument screening said I had a good tone and I liked the shiny keys.”
Wingspan: Is being in GDYO [Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra] a different experience from being in band on campus? Why or why not?
Sanchez: “Absolutely, I find the music a lot more challenging which pushes me to play confidently. On top of that, being surrounded by so many talented musicians motivates me to practice more and improve. Notably though, our band on campus does have a more familiar feeling, like close-knit. It’s not as scary to make mistakes.”
Wingspan: Over the years, what have you learned from playing clarinet/being in band?
Sanchez: “ I’ve learned a lot about time management and how perfection isn’t always something to strive for. The obsession with perfection turns into a toxic cycle that only brings stress and limitation.”
Wingspan: What advice would you give to someone who is considering joining band?
Sanchez: “Don’t be afraid to talk to people. Everyone is really nice and you build super healthy and strong friendships.”
