Name: Kayleigh Do
Grade: 10
Fine Art: drill team/dance
Years of Experience: first year/eight years
Wingspan: Why did you choose to join the drill team this year?
Kayleigh Do: “I chose to join the drill team this year because I really enjoy dancing, I love the uniforms, and I thought it would be cool and fun.”
Wingspan: How long have you been dancing and how has that experience translated into being on the team now?
Do: “I have been dancing for 8 years. Although I haven’t been doing studio dance, it translates into being on the team now because I think it’s hard to adjust to a dance environment when you haven’t danced at all so I think that has made it easier for me to adjust.”
Wingspan: What has been your favorite part of being on Red Rhythm?
Do: “My favorite part of being on Red Rhythm is, of course, wearing the uniforms and getting to perform for my friends who have never seen me dance before and just spending so much time with the girls on the team.”
Wingspan: What would you say to anyone who is considering trying out for the team?
Do: “I would say really try to put in the work because if you want to make the team you shouldn’t cheat yourself of that. If you don’t make the team the first year you try out, don’t get discouraged because I actually tried out twice. The first time I didn’t make it but the second time I did.”
Wingspan: What are some things that are challenging for you while being on Red Rhythm?
Do: “Some things that have been challenging for me are waking up early in the summer for July training and also waking up early during the school year. Also, adjusting to the types of dance I haven’t done before, especially jazz.”
Wingspan: What has been the highlight of your dance career?
Do: “There’s nothing in particular but I really do love being on the stage and performing.”
Wingspan: What keeps you motivated when you are having a hard time?
Do: “What keeps me motivated is just thinking about all the people who love to see me dance like my friends and family. Also, just thinking about how much I enjoy dancing and try to think about that rather than the negative parts.”
Wingspan: What do you think is the most important part of being a dancer?
Do: “I think the most important part of being a dancer is being able to express yourself because dance is a form of art and I find many times that dance is my escape.”
