“As it Was”.
“Adore You”.
These are some of Harry Styles most popular songs. Joining the list will soon be “Aperture”, “American Girls”, and “Taste Back” from his newest album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, or KissCo.
With many albums, the tracklist is randomized, but this isn’t the case for KissCo. The placement of each song on the tracklist feels strategic; it tells a story. Listening to the record in order feels like following the narrative of experiencing a situationship. The progression from “American Girls” and “Ready, Steady, Go!” to “Paint by Numbers” resembles the phases of infatuation to utmost insecurity.
“I think the idea of me making music being, like, this investment towards this thing that is so much greater than me,” Styles said to CBC. “Like, it’s always about the music, it’s always been about the music. That to me has been the greatest gift I’ve got out of this record–rediscovering that.”
Additionally, Styles used this album to explore a genre of music that is much different from what he was used to writing. During his One Direction days and during his early solo career, his music aligned most with pop-rock, which transitioned to solely pop in his next two albums.
However, KissCo identifies more with techno-pop and modern disco, similar to artists like Blood Orange and Tame Impala
Songs from the album have been getting a lot of attention on social media with the rise of trends using songs like “Taste Back”, “Coming Up Roses”, and “The Waiting Game” to make appreciation posts about loved ones.
Styles will kick off his new “Together, Together” tour featuring the album on May 16 in the Netherlands, and will continue to play in stadiums across the world until the end of this year. Despite mixed reception of the album, with some fans being disappointed and others finding their new favorite songs, many shows are sold out, with tickets being hard to come by.
