After months of training and practice the wrestling season continues on for 10 Redhawks wrestlers who placed in top four at the District 8-5A meet Wednesday and Thursday at Memorial High School.
“The kids did really good at the district meet,” head coach Justin Koons said. “We had a lot of people qualify for regionals as well as some runner ups and a district champ. Both sides, boys and girls, competed to the best of their abilities and gave a great performance.”
Among those advancing to the 5A Region II tournament is sophomore Angel Machiri who placed third in her weight class.
“I think districts went really well,” sophomore Angel Machiri said. “I was super excited for the results and I was excited for how my team did and it was really fun.”
Although the season is over for many Redhawks wrestlers, Machiri has to stay locked in for regionals after qualifying.
“For regionals I think probably more conditioning and working with different partners in the mat room,” Machiri said. “I was really excited because the girl I went against I lost against during the season. I was nervous but I ended up winning.”
Finishing in second place, senior William Randolph also advanced but isn’t completely happy with his performance.
“I was runner up and I think my match went pretty well. It was a bit challenging but I was able to take control and win,” Randoph said. “I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t do better but I had a good time.”
